The PIX11 Morning News is LIVE in Harlem from 6-9 a.m. on Friday

HARLEM, NY — This Friday, we’re taking the PIX11 Morning Show on the road to Harlem, just outside the legendary Apollo Theater. We’ll be spending the morning celebrating the culture of zipcode 10027.

Located on 125th street in Manhattan, the iconic Apollo Theater is said to be where “stars are born and legends are made.”

This is a quote that still holds true to this day, as the Apollo holds its famous weekly amateur nights, allowing dancers, singers, rappers and comedians from across the country to show off their entertainment skills.

The New York City landmark is known for being one of the first theaters to allow mixed-race audience members and performers, creating an opportunity for all artists to come together.

Today, the iconic venue is more than 100 years old and has seen the likes of star-studded talent like James Brown, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Elton John and many others.

Behind the scenes of the Apollo Theater: The Apollo Theater has played a major role in the rise of jazz, swing, R&B and soul music. Artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Gladys Knight and Luther Vandross began their road to stardom on the Apollo stage. Director of Tours, Billy Mitchell, takes us on a tour of the legendary theater.

The Harlem Experience- Harlem Week 2018: Expected to draw over 3 million people, Harlem week is on its 12th year, celebrating fashion, music, food and the Harlem community. Teens take over the Apollo: The Apollo Theater is known for helping artists rise to fame since it first opened. Years later, it's not different. Devon Arnold, who started as an intern at the Apollo, started the Teen Takeover program at the Apollo. Now on its fourth year, it's going strong. We chat with Arnold and rising singer Maia Zoe, who is a member of the program.

DJ Hard Hittin' Harry: DJ Hard Hittin' Harry is a 30+ year veteran, blending unique styles of classic hip hop, R&B, soul, pop and reggae to the clubs, internet and TV. He’s played for multiple celebrities, including The Fugees and Oprah. DJ Hard Hittin’ Harry, who has spinning residencies at the Red Rooster in Harlem, and multiple hot spots in the tri-state area, lists his top summer artists.

Neighborhood Eats: When you go to Harlem, going to the town's most iconic soul food is a must-stop location. Sylvia's Restaurant has attracted popular names including Barack Obama and the CLintons. Tren'ness Woods-Black shares some of their most popular dishes.

Popular filming location: Multiple films and shows have been filmed in or have scenes in Harlem. Marvel's "Luke Cage" is one of them. Sean Ringgold, who plays Sugar in the superhero show and has a special relationship with PIX11, talks about filming in Harlem and the current social issues the show tackles.

Teaching through tennis: The Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program gives children opportunities and support to help them reach their highest potential through tennis, character building and education. Coach Simone Spigner tells PIX11 about the program and how tennis gave made a big difference in her life as well.
